Football Jersey Number Placement: A Photo Guide
Football jersey number placement should be reviewed as a complete layout: front number, back number, shoulder or sleeve numbers, and the name above the back number. Give each area a clear position on the artwork proof, then check the design on the selected jersey cut. The photos below show how white numbers work on two different blue jersey designs.
This is a visual planning guide for a custom team order. Competition requirements for number size and location must be checked with the organizer of the event your team will enter.

Keep the front number separate from chest lettering
In the front reference, the large number occupies the central body panel. Smaller lettering sits above it, while a compact CHD mark is positioned higher on the chest. Those elements have different jobs: the number is the main identifier, the lettering supplies a name, and the small mark adds a secondary detail.
When preparing your own design, show the number, team name and any additional logo together. A front proof with only the number will not reveal whether a longer team name crowds the collar or the top of the digits. Check the actual font and spelling that will be used in production.
Review shoulder numbers from the side

The side photograph reveals a number placement that is less clear in a straight-on view. For a padded football jersey, inspect this area with the shoulder shape in mind. Request both left and right views on the proof, particularly when a sleeve also carries a stripe or logo.
Keep the same digit style across the front, back and secondary placements. If a smaller number needs an adjusted outline or spacing, include that adjustment in the approved artwork rather than leaving it to an assumption.
Allow room for the name above the back number

The back reference uses a large number with clear space above for the name. A short name can look balanced while a longer name needs a different treatment. Review one of the longest names on your roster during design approval, together with a two-digit number, so both fit the agreed area.
For player-specific artwork, keep the name and number in the same roster row. Record capitalization and punctuation exactly. A number repeated consistently across several placements should still be checked against the roster before the final proof is approved.
Use a placement checklist for the artwork proof
| Area | What to check |
|---|---|
| Front | Number position, chest lettering and space below the collar. |
| Back | Name spelling, longest-name fit and separation from the number. |
| Both shoulders or sleeves | Consistent digits, orientation and clearance from other graphics. |
| All placements | Number color, outline, type style and the correct player assignment. |
Questions teams ask about jersey numbers
What size should the numbers be?
Use the requirements for your competition and the printable areas of your chosen model. These photographs do not supply a universal number height. Ask for the dimensions to be written on the proof.
Can we choose a different number color?
Share the requested color with your custom design. Review its contrast against the jersey body and confirm the final combination before production.
Does the photo identify a jersey size or model?
Use the photos for layout reference. Confirm the product model and size separately from the order specification.
Prepare your custom jersey brief
Include your roster, number font, front and back layouts, sleeve details and the competition requirements. For fit planning, read how to size a football jersey over shoulder pads. The custom jersey quote checklist helps you collect the remaining order details.
