Football Size Guide: Mini 3, Junior 6 and Official 9

The CHD Color Series offers three football sizes: Mini 3, Junior 6 and Official 9. Their published weights and circumferences differ, so select the size before choosing the color. For coaches and players ordering a practice ball, the chart below provides a model-specific comparison. If a ball will be used in competition, confirm the required ball specification with your league before ordering.

How do sizes 3, 6 and 9 compare?

CHD size Approximate weight Long circumference Short circumference
Mini 3 220–260 g 520–560 mm 390–420 mm
Junior 6 320–340 g 640–654 mm 470–483 mm
Official 9 400–425 g 700–724 mm 520–540 mm

CHD football sizes and suggested ages

CHD size Size name Suggested players
3 Mini Under 6; a mini or toy-size ball
4 Pee Wee Ages 6–9
6 Junior Ages 9–12
7 Youth Ages 12–14; also commonly chosen for women's and girls' flag football
9 Official Ages 14+ and adults

Age ranges are a starting point. Choose for hand size, skill and your coach’s or league’s requirements. Size numbers and names can differ between brands. “Official” is CHD’s size-9 label and does not mean league approval.

Which size should you choose for practice?

CHD recommends choosing a ball that feels comfortable in your hands. For an existing program, start with the size your coach has specified. When replacing a practice ball, compare its size designation and dimensions with the CHD chart. Avoid choosing from color photos alone: a bright color and a smaller ball are separate product choices.

The difference from size 3 to size 9 includes both weight and circumference. A player familiar with one size should not assume another feels the same because the artwork matches. If your team trains with more than one ball size, keep the quantities separate in your order list.

Are colors tied to a particular size?

The series listing includes Black, White, Green, Yellow, Blue, Pink, Red and Orange across sizes 3, 6 and 9. Check the current selected option and availability before checkout. The product page notes that its individual color reference photos show size 9; the supplied ball follows your selected size and color.

What comes with one ball order?

The football is sold individually. Its listed construction includes a textured composite-leather cover, raised laces and a butyl bladder. The product instructions say to inflate before use until the ball is full and retains slight give when pressed. Follow the current product instructions rather than applying an undocumented pressure value.

Looking for a women’s flag football ball?

The CHD Color Series chart above covers sizes 3, 6 and 9. CHD also lists a separate brown PU Size 7 Youth football for women and girls. Its size is not included in the Color Series measurement table. Confirm the size and specifications required by your league or coach before buying; a product’s audience label alone does not establish competition approval.

For younger players, the separate blue Size 4 Pee Wee football is another model to review. Compare the numeric size on each product page.
